The Carmelite Monastery of the Annunciation, Birkenhead

Our Foundation

St Teresa of Avila, the great reformer and our Foundress, died in 1582.

Twenty-two years later the first Carmel of the Reform was founded in Paris by Sisters who had worked with the great Saint and been trained by her.

Just over a hundred and twenty years ago the Carmel of Notting Hill, London, was founded by Sisters from the Paris Carmel of the Rue D’Enfer, and Mother Mary of Jesus, who was one of the original Paris Sisters, became the first Prioress of Notting Hill and founded over thirty Carmels in Great Britain in the early years of the last century. Our own Birkenhead Carmel was founded in 1918, the fifth foundation from Notting Hill, and therefore has a direct link with St. Teresa herself and has faithfully followed her rule.

Birkenhead, was founded in 1918, the fifth foundation from Notting Hill, and was visited seventeen times by Mother Mary of Jesus.
